Openings In Birdhouse Monitoring Program

DERBY — On Saturday, March 29, from 9:30 am to noon, families, backyard birders, gardeners, and backyard wildlife managers have an opportunity to learn about and participate in a nationwide volunteer research effort to learn more about cavity nesting birds such as Eastern bluebirds and tree swallows during a program at Kellogg’s Environmental Center.

Participants will be introduced to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology project, to the cavity nesting specials via a video and slide presentation, and then follow the presentation with a nest box hike.

Afterwards, interested participants can then sign up for an opportunity to monitor nest boxes on the grounds that regularly produce bluebirds, tree swallows, and house wrens. The first ten participants to register will receive a color poster of cavity nesting birds.

To register and for directions, contact Kellogg Environmental Center at 203-734-2513 Tuesday through Saturday. The center, at 500 Hawthorn Avenue (off Route 34), is operated by DEP, Office of Communications and Education.
