WATERBURY ââ Naugatuck Valley Community College is offering a full-day course in Connecticut Basic Boating/Personal Watercraft on Saturday, May 10. Successful completion of the course qualifies students to obtain a state certificate of personal watercraft operation, which permits the operation of recreational vessels up to 65 feet in length. The course is taught by Marine Services, and the cost is $109.
Certified volunteers from the state Department of Environmental Protection will also lead a course in Connecticut Basic Boating/Personal Watercraft on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, beginning April 8 and ending on April 17. This course also qualifies students for state boating safety certification. The cost is $15.
A full-day course in Coastal Navigation, taught by Marine Services, is being offered on Saturday, May 10. Students will learn how to reach longitude and latitude, how to use a compass, the proper use of plotting tools, distance and speed calculations and more. Students should bring a parallel ruler, dividers, a sharp pencil, and a calculator. The cost is $109.
All of the courses are certified by the National Association of Boating Law Administration (NASBLA) and approved by the US Coast Guard. The deadline to register is April 3. For more information, or to register for a class, contact NVCCâs Continuing Education Division at 203-575-8029.
