Grateful To NYBA
To the Editor:
I would like to express my sincere gratitude and admiration for the outstanding work of the Newtown Youth Basketball Association (NYBA) Senior League. Both of my sons participated enthusiastically in this exceptional program, each playing all four years. My older son completed his experience last season, and my youngest concluded his NYBA journey this past winter.
The NYBA Senior League is genuinely unique, offering high school students a wonderful opportunity to continue enjoying basketball while also cultivating valuable leadership, responsibility, and coaching skills. The innovative approach of having player-coached teams allows students to take on leadership roles, from drafting teams and strategizing game lineups to managing team communications. These experiences have not only deepened their love for basketball but have also contributed meaningfully to their personal growth and maturity.
The league’s thoughtfully structured format — competitive weekly games without practices, culminating in exciting March Madness-style playoffs and a celebratory All-Star event — fosters camaraderie, teamwork, and lasting friendships. For countless students, including my own, the memories created through this program have been truly unforgettable, extending well beyond the basketball court.
This exceptional experience would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of numerous NYBA volunteers who generously give their time, passion, and energy year after year. In particular, I wish to recognize Rick McLeod and Adam Carta, whose leadership, tireless efforts, and unwavering commitment continue to build upon and enhance the foundational work of many dedicated volunteers before them. Their contributions, along with those of the referees, student participants, supportive families, and the broader NYBA community, ensure the continued excellence and success of this remarkable program.
Thank you, NYBA, for enriching our children’s lives and strengthening our community through basketball. Your collective efforts make Newtown a better, more connected place.
