To the Editor:

Trump and Musk’s plan to destroy social security has begun. They need this money to fund tax cuts for the billionaire class. Republicans in Congress promise they will never touch social security because such a move would be too unpopular with the American people, and more specifically their Republican base.

Musk and DOGE have discovered a simple workaround strategy that does not involve Congress. There is no need to pass a law to eliminate social security when it can be hollowed out by making huge cuts to staff, spending and operating systems.

Martin O’Malley, who served as the Social Security Commissioner until Trump took office, has said that the loss of experienced employees who manage social security’s intricate computer systems will likely lead to a disruption in service and eventually interrupt the benefit payments that are sent to more than 73 million retirees and people with disabilities.

The social security system will collapse from within and the Republicans can claim they had nothing to do with it.

We must get Elon Musk and DOGE out of our government.
