Around Sandy Hook School on Friday, March 14, were clues to this year’s One School One Read book.

During multiple presentations for different grade levels, Sandy Hook School library/media specialist Yvonne Cech and reading consultant Cynthia McArthur unveiled this year’s One School One Read title.

As Ms Cech explained to one group on Friday, the program has the entire school community — including students, staff, and parents — read the same book at once.

Ms Cech also shared a list of past One School One Read book at Sandy Hook School, and after each title was shared students responded with a cheers.

For the 2002-03 school year, the first year One School One Read was held at Sandy Hook School, the school community read Charlotte’s Webb by E.B. White. Other One School One Read books have been The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White, The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden, The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling, Toys Go Out by Emily Jenkins, The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney, Red Slider by Blair Hickson, A Bear Named Trouble by Marion Dane Bauer, The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies, Stuart Little by E. B. White, and Frindle by Andrew Clements.

Before students offered their guesses at what this year’s One School One Read book is, Robin Walker’s third grade class shared a presentation that offered more clues. The students shared the “ABC’s of space” through the presentation, which shared words associated with space that start with each letter of the alphabet, like “Earth” and “universe.”

After students tried to guess the title of the book, Ms Cech and Ms McArthur unveiled a painting of the book’s cover, created by Karen Grasso. This year’s One School One Read book is How Do You Burp in Space? And Other Tips Every Space Tourist Needs to Know by Susan E. Goodman.

“We are going to begin reading together on Monday,” Ms Cech told students.

During the next month, the Sandy Hook School community will celebrate reading How Do You Burp in Space? And Other Tips Every Space Tourist Needs to Know through classroom activities, take-home exercises, and more.

Ms Cech also announced the school’s culminating celebration of reading How Do You Burp in Space? And Other Tips Every Space Tourist Needs to Know will by held on April 8, when students are set to talk via Skype with the International Space Station.
