Zachary Schwartz, son of Scott and Lisa Schwartz, has been named by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coach’s Association as an All Academic for the Men’s NCAA Division 3. A 2007 graduate of Newtown High School, Zack is one of two students at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., to receive this award in 2008. The award honors student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average and must finish in the top 25 percent of the field at their respective NCAA regional meet.

Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Ryne R. Friedman, son of Sally A. and Steve R. Friedman and a 2006 Newtown High School graduate, recently graduated from the US Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J. During the eight-week training program, Ryne completed training curriculum consisting of academics and practical instruction on water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, first aid, fire fighting and marksmanship, and an emphasis is also placed on physical fitness, health and wellness. Ryne and other recruits also received instruction on the Coast Guard’s core values; honor, respect and devotion to duty. And learned how to apply them in their military performance and personal conduct. Friedman will join 36,000 men and women who comprise the Coast Guard’s force.

Patrick Dunseith was named to the Dean’s List at the University of Vermont, in Burlington, Vt., for the fall 2008 semester. Patrick is a sophomore Ecological Agriculture major in the College of Agriculture & Life Science at the university.

Caroline C. Kraich and Ethan S. Reed were named on the fall 2008 semester’s Dean’s List at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va. To qualify for the dean’s list at the school, students must attempt at least 12 credit hours graded and earn a 3.4 grade point average during the semester.
