Volunteer Center Opportunities

DANBURY — The Volunteer Center believes that connecting people to volunteer service opportunities strengthens the community.

The following are some current volunteer opportunities. Call 797-1154 or visit VolunteerDanbury.org for more information on these opportunities.

*Spring Buddy Baskets are needed by April 1 to be distributed to low income preschoolers in the greater Danbury area.

The baskets will be filled with educational and recreational items. Individuals or groups who would like to participate in this project should contact the Volunteer Center and they will email all the information needed to create the baskets.

This is a wonderful project for families, friends, coworkers, scouts, youth groups, etc.

*Women’s Center Spring Training for both Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Hotline volunteers will begin in April and run for eight weeks.

The 40-hour training is required for all potential volunteers who can then staff a hotline from home, run support groups, assist with counseling, and/or work in the shelter. Minimum age is 18 and bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply.

*Bowl with Friends on April 25 in New Milford as a fundraising event for a local mentoring program.

Form a team of five, give it a name and then register it. Teams can be made up of middle school students to adults.

Volunteers age 16 and up will also be needed the day of the event to assist with registration and other tasks anytime during the hours of 9 am to 5 pm.

*Board member openings exist in many area nonprofit agencies. If you are interested in assisting a nonprofit with their governance, consider joining a board of directors.

*Blood drive volunteers needed to greet and register potential donors or to serve refreshments to the donors. These opportunities are scheduled throughout the greater Danbury area and could be weekdays or weekends. The minimum age is 15.

*An ESL instructor is needed one or two mornings a week in Danbury to help community members whose primary language is not English to understand, speak, read, and write English for everyday use.

*Danbury Railway Museum volunteers are needed to assist as tour guides, front desk, gift shop, conductors, engineers, car hosts, during special events, and for maintenance of historic equipment.

The White Street museum is open Tuesday to Sunday year round.

Wish List

*Conference room furniture is needed for a local hospice program. They would like either one very large table or smaller tables that can be moved together. They can also use 15–25 chairs.

All furniture should be in very good condition. They will provide a donation receipt.

*A refrigerator in excellent condition and not more than ten years old is needed by a mental health recovery program. The maximum size they can accept is 30½ inches wide and 70 inches tall.
