From 8 am to 1 pm, Saturday, March 28, Newtown Parent Connection will present the second Parent University, a popular event of workshops, speakers, and activities geared toward positive parenting, at the Newtown Middle School.
Registration online at NewtownParentConnection.org by Wednesday, March 25, is required for the free program, as is preregistration for babysitting services. Check-in is at 8 am with a complimentary continental breakfast, and the day will be kicked off by keynote speaker Norm Bossio delivering âNow That We Raised You, How Dare You Grow Up?â
Along with author and nurse Mary Ronan, psychiatrist Dr Mark Ligorski, neurofeedback practitioner Roseann Capanna-Hodge, NHS guidance counselor Jeff Tolson, and social worker Mandy Tolson, other workshop presenters include Claudette Ames, MS, LADC, LPC, substance abuse counselor, and Kevin Suckow, Microsoft executive and IT expert.
âBut Everybodyâs Doing It!â is the title of Ms Amesâ workshop focused on identifying risk factors that can lead to substance abuse. The course will also present positive factors that can minimize the chances of children engaging in negative behaviors and offer reasons why kids use drugs.
âTexting, Sexting, & Social Networking: The Dangers of Cyberspace,â by Kevin Suckow, is a multimedia workshop format. This program presents a parental guide to ensuring cyber-safety for children of all ages. Topics will cover the current uses of technological devices and the dangers involved.
Another multimedia workshop will be presented by Tom Janette, director of community affairs for the State Narcotics Enforcement Officers Association, âWhatâs Really Going On In Town?â Mr Janette will address the latest trends in substance use and risky behaviors in Newtown and surrounding communities. Signs and symptoms of substance use will also be discussed.
Mr Janette researches current drug issues and has collaborated on several pamphlets for a series called âDrugs in Connecticutâ that covers existing problems such as pharmaceuticals, heroin, ecstasy, GHB, and inhalants.
Other workshops will focus on childrenâs health, nutrition genetics, exercise, and medical issues of interest; and a candid discussion of talking to children about sexuality, as well as recent medical trends and treatments for young women.
