Newtown’s Three Color Guard Divisions All Win At MAC Competition

All three divisions of the Newtown Color Guard were awarded first place at the March 13 Musical Arts Conference (MAC) competition at Naugatuck High School.

Under the leadership of Director Bob Findley and instructors Alyssa Wade and Missy Metcalf (both members of the varsity team), the Junior Color Guard performed “Journey to Friendship” and improved its score by 7.2 points to defeat Beecher.

The Scholastic AAA junior varsity, under the direction of Findley and Janos Pergely, and also instructed by Varsity team captains Nicole Scalora and Sarah Smith, bested their closest competitor, Shelton, by 4.2 points to score 85.7 with their show “Quest for the Gold.”

The Scholastic National A varsity team, which heads to South Brunswick, NJ this weekend for the two-day World Guard International (WGI) Power Regionals, dazzled both the audience and the judges to score 89 points, defeating five other competitors to bring home the first place trophy for their “Stargazer” show. Staff members are Findley, Pergely, Michelle Liscio, and Victoria Whittingham.

This Saturday, March 20, the Junior and Scholastic AAA junior varsity divisions will compete at Jonathan Law High in Milford, at 6 pm. Trumbull High will host the MAC Championships on March 27, and the varsity team will head to the WGI World Championships April 8-10.
