NAMI Book Group To Explore Stroke Insights
FAIRFIELD â NAMI Fairfield and the Fairfield Public Library are offering a new book group whose book selections will explore aspects of mental health and the brain.
NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Its goals are to support those living with mental illness and their loved ones, to provide educational programs to the community that foster understanding and healthy living, and to provide advocacy
The first meeting will be held Thursday, April 1, from 7 to 8:30 pm, at the Fairfield Library Main Branch, 1080 Old Post Road. The first book to be discussed will be My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientistâs Personal Journey by Dr Jill Bolte Taylor.
Dr Bolte Taylor was a 37-year-old Harvard-trained and published brain scientist when a blood vessel exploded in her brain. Through the eyes of a curious neuroanatomist, she watched her mind completely deteriorate whereby she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Because of her understanding of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and an amazing mother, Dr Bolte Taylor completely recovered her mind, brain, and body.
In her book, she shares her recommendations for recovery and the insight she gained into the unique functions of the right and left halves of her brain.
Copies are available at the library. For more information, call 203-259-9779.
