Let The Board Of Education

Do Its Job

(The following letter to the Legislative Council has been received for publication.)

Dear Council Members:

I have no children in the Newtown school system, so you would think that the cuts made by be welcomed by me. If I were only concerned with property taxes and the current economic environment, I might very well welcome these cuts. However, we as citizens of Newtown and the United States have a greater obligation, and that is simply to assure that all of our students are provided with the best possible education.

We have hired a very capable superintendent, elected dedicated and committed members to the Board of Education and are adding physical improvements to our teaching facilities, yet we grant fiscal power to six individuals to control the quality of education of over 5,000 students, all under the guise of fiscal responsibility. Let the Board of Education do its job. Accept their very detailed presentation to the Board of Finance as their absolute financial requirement and reinstate the $2.5 million.

If we can build a town hall that cost the town well over $12 million to house approximately 300 employees, certainly we can spend another $2.5 million to maintain the quality of education for over 5,000 students.

Sincerely,

A.P. Roznicki

169 Hanover Road, Newtown                                    March 17, 2010
