The EverWonder Children’s Museum will reopen for business on Saturday, April 4, rather than on the previously scheduled March 21 date.

Snow accumulation and water damage have delayed their opening, museum staff said this week.

“We have decided to move the reopening,” said Executive Director Tamara Tragakiss Barry. According to a recent press release, “We learned late last week that the leaks might not be fixed in time for our originally scheduled reopening, and so we decided to err on the side of caution. We’re disappointed but at the same time aware that mother nature sometimes just overrules our best laid plans,” she said.

The reopened museum will begin regular hours on Saturday, April 4, but will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 5. The museum will then be open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm; and Sundays from noon to 5 pm.

A formal grand reopening celebration and festivities will be June 6.

Formed in 2011, EverWonder provides hands-on learning activities and exhibits in the science, mathematics, arts, and technology fields that are customized to inspire ages 2 through 12. Information about upcoming events, memberships and the new facility are also available on the museum’s website (www.everwondermuseum.org) or emailing info@everwondermuseum.org. Members will be invited to a Members-Only Sneak Preview event on April 1.

The new space at 31 Pecks Lane is very close to the museum’s previous location, also on Pecks Lane, but at roughly 7,000 square feet, the new space is more than triple the size of the old.

The museum’s reopening is due in large part to funds raised and grants met during a winter fundraising campaign. Programming and a reopening is now possible, organizers announced in early February.

A recent effort raised $40,000, and the museum will receive $25,000 in matching funds from the Jeniam Foundation, along with the EverWonder board’s own match of $15,000.

“The donors really made this happen,” Ms Barry said in February last month. “Because of them, we’ll be able to once again offer great exhibits and programming to children in Newtown and the surrounding communities.”

The original EverWonder space ran successfully from April 2013 until August 2014 in a building at 31 Pecks Lane, before the board decided to relocate into a larger, nearby location.

EverWonder’s mission is to inspire a lifelong love of learning in children through interactive exhibits and programming in science, technology, engineering, and math. EverWonder is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and serves families in a 20-mile radius. It was formed in January 2011 by a group of parents whose purpose is to open and operate an interactive museum for children and families in northern Fairfield County.

EverWonder Children’s Museum has announced its special events for the month of January.
