Police Seek Bicyclists For Special Olympics Fundraiser

Police are seeking local residents who are interested in participating in a bicycle-riding event that serves as a fundraiser for the Connecticut Special Olympics.

Several members of the town police department plan to participate in the 2nd Annual Ride for The Flame event, which is slated for Sunday, June 26. That event is sponsored by and attended by law enforcement personnel from across the state. Civilians are encouraged to attend and ride bicycles with law enforcement staffers in the fundraiser.

The all-day event includes 25-, 50- and 100-mile scenic bicycle rides along the Connecticut shoreline. A family fun ride also is held.

Last year, police and civilians from Connecticut who participated in the bicycle-riding event raised $37,000 for the Special Olympics, police said in a statement.

People interested in participating in June may contact Officer William Chapman at the police department, 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841. His e-mail address is william.chapman@newtown-ct.gov. Also, additional information on the event is available at http://soct.convio.net/ridefortheflame2011.
