*Independent Living Day, Saturday, April 23: A Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS) annual event, Independent Living Day allows low to moderate income seniors and disabled residents to remain in their homes independently for longer periods of time. Additionally NYFS provides the seniors with a link to the outside community making them feel welcomed and cared for as part of the larger community.

Independent Living Day has a few shifts you can work: volunteer at a home, 9:30 to 11:30 am, or 1 to 3 pm.

Family Programs

*Parenting Education Program (PEP): Putting Children First is a State of Connecticut program required as a prerequisite to granting a divorce. Sessions are designed to help families cope with the effects of divorce on children.

Call Sheila at NYFS for more information including scheduling.

Youth Programs

*Job Bank: Job Bank is accepting applications from qualified 13-18 year olds in Newtown who want employment babysitting, pet sitting, mowing lawns, shoveling, or performing other house hold chores.

Call Monday through Friday between 3-5 pm for an application.

Support Groups

*Circle of Parents: This mutual self-help support program for parents is based on a simple and time tested model: through peer-to-peer leadership and support at meetings, people in a parenting capacity, can over time, gain self-esteem, overcome isolation and improve their parenting skills by exchanging support and positive parenting suggestions.

Please call Jessi at NYFS to register for the program.

*PQI (Performance Quality Improvement) Meeting: In our effort to create quality programs responsive to community needs, NYFS invites all interested members of the community to the monthly PQI meetings.

The next meeting will be held Monday, March 28, from noon to 2 pm.
