Recognizing Same Sex Unions

Is A Bad Idea

(The following letter to Gov M. Jodi Rell has been received for publication.)

Dear Gov Rell:

I understand that the State of Connecticut is considering honoring same sex unions. I believe that this is a bad decision.

A small (but vocal) percentage of our citizens want this. Many of the reasons they want this they can do already. They want to be able to make medical decisions if their loved one is unable to. They can do this with a power of attorney. They want to be able to receive death benefits if their loved one dies. They can do this by being named beneficiary. The big reason is that they can get insurance benefits from their employer for their partner. Allowing this will set a bad precedent. Once this door is opened what will stop others from demanding rites as a union. For example an employed person’s cousin has no insurance. They may want to be called a couple to get the relative coverage. What will happen when three people want to be considered a union?

Marriage for centuries has been one man and one woman. This is the way God made us. Almost every society from the beginning of time has believed this. I ask that if the citizens of Connecticut do not sound off loudly and this bill makes it to your desk that you will veto it.

I believe that in your short tenure as governor that you have done an admirable job in tough times. I understand that this is a difficult subject. I hope that you to seek guidance from God before making a final decision.

May God bless you,

Duncan Brown
