Newtown Newcomers & Neighbors Offering Recognition Scholarship
Realizing that most scholarships are awarded based on a multi-year history of achievement within the school, Newtown Newcomers and Neighbors will for the second year offer a $500 recognition scholarship to a graduating Newtown High School senior, who is a ânewcomerâ to the NHS community.
The eligibility requirements for the scholarship are three-fold, yet simple: The applicant must be graduating from NHS in June; the applicant must have moved into Newtown and/or NHS during their junior or senior year; and the applicant must have made a positive impact on their school or community.
Applications are available in the Career Center at Newtown High School or on the clubâs website, www.NewtownNewcomers.com.
The deadline for applying is April 15.
Completed applications need to be mailed to Newtown Newcomers and Neighbors, Attn Scholarship, PO Box 3644, Newtown CT 06470.
For further information on the scholarship, contact Margie Mayers at 270-1551.
Tory Daines, winner of the 2004 scholarship, entered NHS as a senior and in one short year made an impact on the music program. She played violin and occasionally string bass in the orchestra, performed with the Select Choir, and established a new string ensemble.
Tory also provided help to other musicians and played lead guitar with two local bands, all the while performing in the Ridgefield Youth Orchestra.
She is currently enrolled at the University of Rhode Island and majoring in violin performance.
