Nighthawk Swimmers Tenth In Class LL State Meet

Newtown High School's boys' swimming and diving team placed tenth among 22 squads to score points in the Class LL State Championships, March 9 and 16. The diving competition took place at Hamden High and the swimming events, at Wesleyan University in Middletown, were held a week later.

The Nighthawks scored 228 points. Meet winner Greenwich had 787. Newtown's results are as follows:

200 yard medley relay: 12. Tommy Horan, Caelan Ritter, Peter Fagerholm, and Owen Gray, 1:43.37 (30 points).

200 freestyle: 10. Chris Lafky, 1:49.58 (17 points).

50 freestyle: 11. Gray, 23.00 (16 points).

Diving: 4. Ian Humber, 384.80 (25 points); 13. Kyle Gaynor, 327.75 (14 points).

100 butterfly: 22. Lafky, 56.45 (3 points).

100 free: 9. Horan, 49.04 (19 points).

500 free: 13. Fagerholm, 4:58.44 (14 points); 21. David Lawrence, 5:11.48 (4 points).

200 free relay: 14. Xavier Williams, Michael Annesley, Lafky, and Gray, 1:36.12 (26 points).

100 backstroke: 9. Horan, 54.49 (19 points).

100 breaststroke: 22. Ritter, 1:04.47 (3 points).

400 free relay: 9. Gray, Fagerholm, Lafky, and Horan, 3:23.55 (38 points).

The State Open is set for March 17 and 19 with the diving competition at Bulkeley High in Hartford and the swimming events two days later, at Yale University in New Haven. Newtown's State Open qualifiers are: Humber (diving), Horan (100 free and 100 backstroke), and the 200 medley and 400 relays.
