SANDWICH GLASSMAKER DESCENDANT TALK APRIL 1 IN BARNSTABLE, MASS.

AVV/CD SET 3/17 #731875

BARNSTABLE, MASS. — The next meeting of the Cape Cod Glass Club at the Sturgis Library on Tuesday, April 1, will feature club member Anne Mahoney Healy, who will talk about her Sandwich ancestors and some of the Sandwich glass objects that descended in her family.

Healey’s great-grandfather was Daniel Fogarty, who came to the United States from Waterford, Ireland. He settled in Sandwich, and blew and pressed glass at the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company factory from around 1840 until his death in 1878. Fogarty was married in Corpus Christi Church in Sandwich, bought a house from glass company founder and agent Deming Jarves, and raised a family in Sandwich. Two daughters and a son also worked at the factory.

His daughter Annie Fogarty married John Patrick Mahoney of Lowell, Mass. Sandwich glass objects from the Fogarty family were among the Mahoney family possessions, and were handed down to Anne Healy. They represent the full range of Daniel’s working years. Some of those objects will be displayed and discussed.

The Cape Cod Glass Club is a nonprofit chapter of the National American Glass Club, dedicated to the study and appreciation of glass regardless of the type or period, with emphasis on American glass. The parent organization holds an annual seminar in May (this May in Boston) and publishes a scholarly journal that members receive three times yearly. The Cape Cod chapter meets monthly from October to December and from March to June. Activities include formal lectures, informal study sessions, and visits to museums and working glassmakers.

The club is open to new members. Membership is not limited to Cape Cod residents. For further information, contact membership chair Dorothy Schatz at 508-428-2141, or program chair Betsy Hewlett at 508-362-6875.
