Sixth Grade Girls Make It Two Straight

For the second straight year, the Newtown sixth grade girls’ basketball team won the Fairfield County Basketball League championship, defeating Darien 21-16 in the title game on Saturday.

On their way to the final game, Newtown defeated Brookfield (39-27) and Westport PAL (25-21). As it has all year, Newtown relied on strong inside play from Erin Burns, Julia Haskins, Alexis Mason, and Kira Smith. Guards Marcella Daily, Sarah Houle, Julia Doyle, and Rylee Mulligan directed the offense. Lauren Carrino and Ashley Santore led the defense for Newtown, which was key to so many of the team’s wins throughout the season.

The Newtown girls also won the regular season Division A title, posting a record of 12-1. The team is coached by Monica Mueller, Mary Sigillo, and Meghan Sigillo.
