Norman D. McConnell

Newtown High School Biology Teacher

Norman D. McConnell, 62, of Shelton, died March 10, with his entire loving family by his side. He was born in Philadelphia September 1, 1949, the son of Margaret S. (Mingle) and Norman W. McConnell.

He was the devoted husband of Susan (Rzepko) McConnell and loving father of his three beloved children. A sister and brother-in-law; two loving grandchildren; and two special nephews also survive Mr McConnell.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from West Chester University in Pennsylvania and continued his education at Walden University in Minnesota, earning his master of science in integration of instructional technology in the classroom. Mr McConnell began his teaching career at Springfield High School in Delaware County, the school from which he graduated. He went on to sell class rings for Jostens. His interest in technology and computers lead him to a career with Apple Unicom and then at Newtown School District as the K–12 instructional technology coordinator.

His love of teaching ultimately lead him back the classroom at Newtown High School as a biology teacher for the past ten years. He was honored to teach “The Future of America” and always incorporated “life’s real lessons” into his teaching of biology. Mr McConnell was very proud of the accomplishments of his students, and their notes and e-mails during his short illness brought him great joy.

He was a longtime Phillies and Eagles fan. His infectious laughter and love for his family and friends will forever live in our hearts.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 188 Rocky Rest Road, Shelton, Saturday, March 17, at 11:30 am.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a scholarship fund to be set up in Mr McConnell’s memory at Newtown High School, attention: Chip Dumais, Newtown High School, 12 Berkshire Road, Sandy Hook CT 06482.

Condolences may be left at www.riverviewfh.com.

The Riverview Funeral Home, Shelton, is entrusted with the arrangements.
