Fifth Grade Mavs Win Tourney

The Newtown Mavericks fifth grade boys’ basketball team won the Fairfield County Basketball League tournament by completing a five-game winning streak with a 45-40 win over REBA in the championship game this past week.

Harry Lucas and Tucker Garrity led the way for the Mavs in the championship game. Lucas had 12 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Garrity totaled 10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.

Gavin Connors, Jack Hannan, and Garret Norberg continued their strong tourney play with 6, 4, and 4 points, respectively. Ben Futterman chipped in with 5 rebounds, 3 points and a couple of steals while playing solid defense.

Thomas Luciano provided ball-handling against the tough REBA press and added 4 points. Derrick Lewis came through with 3 rebounds.

Luke Fischer and Ryan Burns rounded out the Mavericks’ attack with great hustle and strong ball denial. 

It was the Mavericks’ best team effort this season as each player stepped up with the championship hanging in the balance.
