Medley Relay Team Sets School Record As Hawks Make Splash In State Meet
Newtown High School's 200 yard medley relay team broke the school record with a time of 1:39.59, good for a fifth-place finish, in the Class LL state championship meet, which culminated with the swimming events at Wesleyan University in Middletown, on March 14. The relay comprises Peter Fagerholm, Colby Delia, Michael Annesley, and Xavier Williams.
As a team, Newtown finished seventh among 22 teams with a score of 270.5; Greenwich was first with 833.
At the diving portion of the championships, which took place at Hamden High on March 6, Newtown's Kyle Gaynor took home ninth place with a score of 407.75.
In the 200 freestyle race, David Lawrence placed 20th in a time of 1:52.50, and Rick Irving was 22nd in 1:54.52.
Fagerholm came in tenth in the 200 individual medley, clocking in at 1:59.39, and Annesley was 18th in 2:03.29.
In the 50 free, Colby Delia sprinted to a 12th-place finish in 22.60, and Mason Suba earned 18th in 23.32.
Suba was 23rd in the 100 butterfly, making his final touch in 55.07.
Newtown had two competitors in the 100 free as Williams placed 19th in 51.31, and Irving was 21st in 51.84.
In the 500, Lawrence was 17th in a time of 5:01.50.
The 200 free relay of Suba, Annesley, Delia, and Lawrence placed eighth in 1:32.41.
Fagerholm raced to ninth place in the 100 backstroke event with a time of 54.20.
In the 100 breaststroke race, Delia was 16th in 1:02.97.
The 400 free relay of Suba, Williams, Lawrence, and Fagerholm was eighth in 3:21.56.
Newtown's top swimmers will compete in the State Open, at Yale University in New Haven, on Saturday, March 17, beginning at 2:30 pm.
