Newtown Skiers Part Of Southington Team State Championship Success
Nick Jacobs, Matt Jacobs, Andrew Jacobs, and Kyle Fralley are all students at Newtown High School with a passion for ski racing for Stratton Winter Sports (SWSC) club in Stratton, Vt., on weekends. However, what they wanted to do was race for a team at the high school level. The fact there is no high school ski team in town did not stop them, as these skiers found the opportunity to join the Southington High ski team. Starting in January, they would get out of school twice a week and drive themselves to Mount Southington for practice, racing, and a little bit of fun. Not only did they race against high schools around Connecticut, they also race some of their teammates from SWSC who are Connecticut residents.
After a long season of hard work, determination, some bruises, and lots of tuning skis, they made it to the state championships. On February 28, the team assembled at Mount Southington ready for some stiff competition. At the conclusion of the night, they were victorious and won the Connecticut State Championship. The results are based on the overall team score. Nick Jacobs earned second place for the boys.
