Families Of 12/14 Victims Suing Lanza Estate
BRIDGEPORT/DANBURY (AP) — The families of eight people killed in the Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school shooting have filed lawsuits against the estate of the gunman's mother.
The lawsuits contend Nancy Lanza failed to properly secure the rifle her troubled adult son, Adam Lanza, used to kill 20 children and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012. The lawsuits seek to collect on Nancy Lanza's homeowner's insurance.
The lawsuits were filed in Superior Court in Bridgeport, except for one filed in Danbury.
The Hartford Courant on March 13 reported that the families of children Benjamin Wheeler, Dylan Hockley and Daniel Barden; and educators Rachel D’Avino, Mary Sherlach, Victoria Soto and Lauren Rousseau, who were all killed; and teachers Natalie Hammond and Deborah Pisano, who were injured on 12/14, filed the lawsuit in Bridgeport. The Courant additionally reported that the second lawsuit, in Danbury, was filed by the family of student James Mattioli.
Adam Lanza killed his mother at their home before carrying out the school shooting and committing suicide.
Newtown officials bought the home from the Lanza estate for $1 and voted in January to tear it down.
