Richard A. Grey

Master Mechanic for Dixie Cup/American Can Company

Richard A. “Dick” Grey, 88, died March 11 in Newtown. Mr Grey was born in Easton, Penn., November 27, 1919, and married the love of his life, Peg, May 23, 1941.

He is survived by his children Barbara Dorry and her husband, Edward, of Sandy Hook, Aubrey Grey and his wife, Ruth, of Westlake Village, Calif., and Margaret Grey and her husband, Michael Lauterbach, of Hamden. Four grandsons, Andrew and Paul Grey of California, Brandon Dorry of Connecticut, and Christian Dorry and wife, Dawn Marks Dorry, of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews, including Gwynne Gilbert of Clarks Summit, Penn., also survive Mr Grey.

After Mr Grey’s return from serving two years in Europe during World War II, Peg and Dick made their home in Easton, Penn., before moving to Newtown in 1970. He worked in production equipment maintenance for Dixie Cup/American Can Company and retired as its master mechanic.

His hobby was model trains and he had an HO layout that astounded all who saw it. In later years, he meticulously restored Lionel trains to their original condition. Gardening was another passion and his roses were spectacular. Mr Grey was an avid racecar fan, starting with stock cars in Nazareth, Penn., to NASCAR in later years.

Mr and Mrs Grey lived in Greenville, S.C., for 15 years until Peg’s death in 2006.

Mr Grey’s family is grateful for the loving care of Ashlar of Newtown for the last 16 months.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mr Grey’s memory to the Ashlar of Newtown Quality of Life Fund, PO Box 70, Wallingford CT 06492, or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Church Street Station, PO Box 780, New York NY 10008-0780.
