Girls 6th Grade Travel
Newtown 19, New Milford 17 â The Newtown Bounce advanced to the tournament championship after this past weekendâs win over New Milford. Danielle Shine led the offense with 13 and 5 rebounds, and made an amazing shot while seated on the floor. Mary Joe Rossi had 13 rebounds and 2 steals. Tess Murray and Kerry Scallon each had a basket, and Kristie VosWinkel scored a pair of points on free throws. Jessie Principi and Hope McMorran had 3 rebounds and 1 assist apiece. Amanda Crowell and Jenny Indelicato played tough defense and Amanda Cirella had an all-around great game.
Boys 8th Grade Travel
Brookfield 47, Newtown 46 â Kyle Wilcox scored 14 points and Brendan DeAngelis added 13 to lead Newtown. Brookfield won the game with a last-second free throw after Newtown had built a 19-point lead at halftime. Newtownâs Eric Samuelson was a key rebounder in the opening half.

Monroe, 48 Newtown 46 â In the hardâfought game, Newtownâs David Lucia led all scorers with 14 points, pulled down 9 rebounds and blocked 2 shots. Newtown got solid contributions off the bench from Justin Brophy, Ryan Crowell, and Trey Trudell. Brendan DeAngelis and Dan Gallegher each chipped in 8 points. Point guard Josh Barrett dished out 6 assists and blocked 6 shots in the loss.
Boys 5th Grade Travel
Newtown 41, Ridgefield 34 â Newtown advanced to the semifinals in the Fairfield County Basketball League Tournament with a hard-fought win. Newtown trailed by two at the end of the first quarter, but went on a 10-2 run to start the second. Colton Smith, Julian Dunn, Jeremy Doski, and Logan Walsh came up with steals and easy transition baskets. Jacob Burden hit a key basket early in the second quarter that gave the locals a lead they never relinquished. Colton Smith led a balanced scoring attack with 10 points, Julian Dunn had 9 and Connor Roche added 6 points.
Newtown 45, Darien 35 â Newtown advanced to the FCBL finals behind a comeback effort. After falling behind early, Newtown went on an 18-8 run to take a 20-16 lead at the half. Michael Parkersâ long jumper evened the score at 14 and Kevin Contes had a put-back to give Newtown the lead for good. Jeremy Doski had three consecutive baskets midway through the fourth quarter and clutch free throws by Troy Frangione late in the game iced the victory. Connor Roche, Mike Cirone, Kevin Conte, and Julian Dunn led the rebounding effort and Jeremy Doski led the scoring with 13 points. Colton Smith, Troy Frangione, and Connor Roche combined for 25. Newtown faces New Haven Saturday for the championship.
Senior Girls
Red Hot Chili Peppers vs Orange Zingers â The Red Hot Chili Peppers were led offensively by Ashley Perry with 14 points, while defensively they were led by Cara Colacurcio, Rachel Merlin, and Genie Santayana. The Orange Zingers were led offensively by Brady Eggleston and Natalie Villa who combined for 14 points, while defensively they were led by Audra Sarna and Eggleston.
Thunderbolts 25, Purple People Eaters 24 â Katie Schmidt dropped in 13 points. Linda Magliocco picked up the team after a big lead from Purple People Eaters. Schmidt powered offense. The Purple People Eaters were led offensively by Michelle Richettelli with 6 points, while defensively the team was led by Kaley Kruger and Bethany.
Thunderbolts 46, Red Hot Chili Peppers 27 â The Thunderbolts gained first place for the season. Great team effort with everyone scoring at least once. Ashley Kuligowski 11 points, Hannah Tenebaum 10 points, Tori Picerno 8 points and Shannon Barra 2 points. Leading the Red Hot Chili Peppers was Rachael Marlin with 8 points, while defensively the team was led by Ashley, Carolyn, and Emily.
Purple People Eaters 37, Orange Zingers 27 â Betsy dropped in 12 points. Leading the Purple People Eaters were Kaley and Betsy. Erin Nemeth popped in 12 points for the Orange Zingers, while Natalie Villa, Brady Eggleston and Emily led the team defensively.
Junior Boys
Nighthawks 49, Tarheels 39 â Mike Scharfenberg drove in 15 points and Pat Sullivan grabbed 8 rebounds and added 12 points for the Nighthawks. Brandon Cooper, John Hull & Collin Morris played outstanding defense. Excellent team effort overall. Mike Daubert popped in 19 points for the Tarheels. Evan Noonan (5 assists), Don Morrissey (3 steals), and Pat Riccardi (6 rebounds) led the team defensively. Great team effort.
Bears 51, Maulers 30 â Phillips drove in 25 points, and Harrington and Roche combined for 12 points for the Bears. Trevor Carey (4 assists), Justin (5 steals), Mike Greenwood (11 rebounds) led the team defensively. Devellis led the Maulers with 9 points. The team played good offense and defense.
Huskies 48, Avalanche 44 â Reid Schmidt dropped in 17 points and Dom Fedak added 13 points. Jack McManus played with a lot of heart for the Huskies. Down 10, Matt Shannon hit three 3-pointers to bring the score to within 2 points. Shannon drove in 17 points, and Sean Burson added 16 points, including three 3-point baskets and 8 steals. Ben Stoller (4 assists), Sean Burson (8 steals), and Robbie Daigle (8 rebounds) led the Avalanche defensively.
Boys Intermediate (5th)
Bulldogs 24, Rockets 22 (Overtime Thriller) â Will Dalton and Jason Ferrari combined for 15 points and 12 rebounds. Floor general Max Rucinski ran the balanced Bulldog attack. Rucinski, Ferrari, and Joey Carrino led the team defensively. Bobby Archiere and Wiley Zahasky combined for 11 points for the Rockets. Brennan OâSullivan and Eric Cascone anchored the defense, along with Kustav Mitra.
Twisters 29, Sonic Pumpkins 20 â Mark Dowling and Jared Devellis combined for 15 points. Kevin Ovendorf, Sawyer Conrad and Andrew Cragin all had key baskets. Bobbie Lyndon lead a ferocious defense that rallied from a 10 point deficit. Solid defense and good passing helped the Sonic Pumpkins control the game for the first three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Twisters came roaring back. Joey Santella popped in 10 points. Shane Quimby led the team defensively.
Junior Girls
Knicks 33, Hawks 26 â Kelly Gaston had a double-double 17 points, 16 rebounds. Lia Tassinari popped in 6 points for the Knicks. Carly and Nicole had an excellent defensive game. The Hawks played a great team game offensively and defensively. Lydia Beiter dropped in 13 points and Molly Emmerthal dropped in 4 points.
Da Bears 31, Rebels 27 â Lindsay Jossick sunk 12 points and Molly Mahoney added 6 points for Da Bears. Leading the team defensively were Katie Fossum with 5 steals and Luiza Tolkucci. Jessica Gibbons drove in 11 points, and Kiersten Lynch shot another 6 points for the Rebels. Kaitlyn VosWinkel led the team defensively.
Bantam Girls
Eagles 22, Devils 12 â The Eagles were led offensively by Margaret Elkins and Katie Reilly, while defensively they were led by Katie Laaksonen and Lauren Wilcox. The Devils were led offensively by Maren Brady and Kelly Merrick, while defensively they were led by Casey Harkins and Hannah Bellagamba.
Tigers 14, Wildcats 10 â The Tigers were led offensively by Julia Scarangella and Clare Boyle, while defensively they were led by Lindsay Hoyt and Haley Ryan. The Wildcats were led offensively by CeeCee DelRossi and Marissa Thill, while defensively they were led by Natalie Muratori and Amy Talbot.
Hawks 24, Purple No Names 16 â The Hawks were led offensively by Caitlin Linden and Allie Silkowski, while defensively they were led by Brittney Meisenheimer and Sara Bender. The Purple No Names were led offensively by Maddie Strokis and Courtney Demeglio, while defensively they were led by Maddie Bridges and Stephanie Carr.
