Newtown High Schoolâs boysâ swimming and diving team finished in fifth place in this weekâs Class LL State Championship. The competitions culminated with the swimming finals at Wesleyan University in Middletown on Tuesday afternoon.
Greenwich took first overall with 608 points. Newtown had 274 to finish in fifth among 20 schools that scored points in the state meet.
Newtown set five school records and one swimmer earned All-State accolades, at the state competition.
Stefan Toi set an NHS mark and earned All-State honors with his time of 1:59.69 in the 200 IM. Luke Fiore set school records with his preliminary race result time of 49.27 in the 100 yard freestyle and finals result in the 200 free. Two Newtown relay teams also set school records.
The Nighthawks finished the season in a tie with Brookfield for second place in the South-West Conference, after finishing third in the SWC Championships. The Hawks initially thought they had settled for third overall this season, because of their finish at the SWC meet and the weight of the placement at the conference championships, but NHS Head Coach Matt Childs said his team earned enough points to finish in a tie with its rivals from Brookfield.
In the state meet this week, the Nighthawks had six top-five finishes.

200 yard medley relay: 6, 1:45.49. The team comprises Anthony Fiore, Tony Fragoso, Matt Iassogna, and James OâConnor.
200 yard freestyle: Luke Fiore, 9, 1:48.68 (school record); Wes Hood, 10, 1:49.46; Alex Kron, 11, 1:49.49.
200 yard IM: Stefan Toi, 3, 1:59.69 (school record); Anthony Fiore, 12, 2:06.13.
50 yard freestyle: James OâConnor, 23, 24.24.
100 yard butterfly: Stefan Toi, 4, 53.94; Matt Iassogna, 15, 57.86; Kyle OâConnor, 20, 1:00.80.

400 yard freestyle relay: 3, 3:18.01. The team comprises Wes Hood, Luke Fiore, Anthony Fiore and Stefan Toi (school record).
