Author Talk And Book Signing At Library

Sandy Hook resident and author Martin Margulies will be at the C.H. Booth Library, Thursday, March 26, at 7 pm, to discuss his book The Battle of Prestonpans 1745, published by Tempus Publishing Limited in 2007.

The book reexamines the events leading up to the brief, first major battle of the Jacobite Uprising in Scotland when rebel forces, led by Prince Charles Stuart, thoroughly routed Lieutenant General Sir John Cope and his force of British regulars. In researching the book, Mr Margulies discovered a transcript of the trial of Sir John Cope, who was accused of incompetence following the battle — at a time when Britain was routinely executing admirals who were not doing their best for the crown. The Battle of Prestonpans 1745 reveals the myth behind the myth that saw the legendary Hanoverian British officer unjustly ridiculed for centuries.

“I’ve always loved history,” said Mr Margulies, a law professor emeritus at Quinnipiac University in an interview with The Bee last summer, “British and French history of the 17th and 18th Century, and I read accounts of the rebellion battles by historian John Prebble.”

Mr Margulies will sign copies of his book following the talk. Refreshments will be served.
