Orienteering Club Season-Opener

DANBURY — Western Connecticut Orienteering Club will open its 2003 season with a meet at Tarrywile Park on Saturday, March 22. Rick DeWitt will be setting up the event, which will run from 10 am to noon.

Participants will use an orienteering map and compass to find their way across the terrain, seeking orange and white flags at various land features. The features will be marked on the map and act as checkpoints along the course.

Participants decide on the route to each feature and punch a scorecard to confirm finding each flag. In orienteering as a competition, the winner is the person or team who punches all the flags in the shortest time.

At Tarrywile, standard courses for beginners to experts will be available. Instruction and training will be available for beginners. Bring a compass if possible; a small supply will be available for loan.

Cost is $6 per person. For more information contact Mr DeWitt at WRDeWitt@snet.net, contact George Walker at 860-658-7963, or visit www.faculty.edu/RDeWitt/wcoc.
