NEW MILFORD - A dominating performance (five shutouts in five games) led the Newtown Hurricanes to the girls' 12-and-under championship of the Canterbury Indoor Soccer Tournament last weekend.
NEW MILFORD â A dominating performance (five shutouts in five games) led the Newtown Hurricanes to the girlsâ 12-and-under championship of the Canterbury Indoor Soccer Tournament last weekend.
The Hurricanes got going quickly, beating Sherman 2-0 behind goals from Genna Scheuerell and Sarah Shannon, with goalie Cassie David registering the first shutout. Watertown was up next and Tania Domingos scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win. In Game #3, Casey Schulz, Scheuerell and Domingos scored for a 3-0 victory.
In all three wins, the forward and mid-field ball-handling of Megan Hansen, Katie Serock and Kelley Sullivan led to numerous shots and dominated the flow of the game for the Hurricanes.
The defense continued its strong play in the last two games against Brookfield and Danbury, both played to 0-0 ties. Led by defenders Colleen Thornberg, Emily Weber, Haley Keane, Molly Curry and goalie David, the final two shutouts secured the championship.
The Hurricanes will travel to Eastern Connecticut State University on March 23 to represent the Northwest District at the State Indoor Finals.

RAMPAGE 3, TRUMBULL: In a battle of unbeatens, Newtown came out on top. Goaltender Katie Pessin stopped 24 shots â one a penalty kick and another that required a dive with full extension. Ally Modzelewski, Jordyn Good, Berenice Bryant and Taylor Smith excelled on defensive while Laura Bittman, Hannah Basch-Gould and Good scored the goals. Monica Warek and Caleigh Boyle recorded assists.
