Lions Plan Pancake Breakfast

To Support The Parade

The Lions Club of Newtown in conjunction with the Leo Club from Newtown High School will hold a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, March 29, from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm, at the United Methodist Church on Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook.

Funds raised from the breakfast will be used in support of Newtown’s Labor Day Parade and to support Leo Club activities. Funds contributed to the Labor Day Parade Committee will supplement the funding already committed by the Newtown Lions Club.

The Lions Club plays a major role in sponsorship of the Labor Day Parade every year. This helps to fund the operating expenses of the parade and to bring area marching bands and other participants to this annual event. The first Labor Day parade was introduced in 1962 as a fun end of summer festival for the town and has grown in popularity ever since. This marks the 41st year the parade will be held in town.

For those who look forward to the Labor Day festivities, this will be an enjoyable way to help meet the funding needs of the Parade Committee. Additionally, participants will be helping support the community service activities of the Newtown High School Leo Club.

The Newtown Lions Club is very active in supporting the local community. It raises funds in support of the Newtown Fuel Bank, Meals on Wheels, the Newtown Fire Commission, Women in Newtown, Newtown Youth Services, Datahr, the Newtown Fund Christmas Baskets, Family Counseling Center, and many other community activities and agencies. It is also actively involved in providing staffing for community activities such as local blood drives, renovation of trails at the Orchard Hills Park, and construction of the playgrounds at Treadwell Park. They are dedicated to helping enrich the magnificent community in which they live.

The Leo Club is a student organized and operated program at Newtown High School whose goal is to teach young people how to organize and contribute to community service projects. The Lions Club stepped forward to sponsor this Club when the Key Club was discontinued after the Kiwanis Club stopped operating in town. The Leos have been active in most of the service projects that the Lions have participated in over the last couple of years.

Lions Club members appreciate the support of the community and hope that everyone will come to the pancake breakfast.
