Newtown Rotary Cited For Assistance To Youths

Mark Fries, president of Newtown Scholarship Association, thanked Newtown Rotary for their continued support of higher education for Newtown students. Since 1984, $50,000 in scholarships have been given out in the name of Newtown Rotary.

Newtown Rotary president Nick Borrello said the club is dedicated to training and educating our youths so that they can become responsible citizens and our leaders of tomorrow.

Besides contributing to scholarships, the club sponsors four students each year to attend the Rotary Youth Leaders Awards Weekend (RYLA) where they interact with approximately 40 other students from Southern Connecticut. Under the guidance and leadership of professionals, they discuss such topics as time management, self-esteem, leadership qualities, effective communication, problem solving, and “How I can use my RYLA Experience.”

In June a student is sponsored to attend the World Affairs Seminar at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater campus. Approximately 2,000 high school students are in attendance, about 40 percent from other countries, and they learn about many of the problems facing the world of today and discuss possible means towards a solution. Hopefully this opens young people’s minds, giving them a broader view of world affairs. They are our international leaders of the future.

The Rotary Club of Newtown meets for a dinner meeting every Monday at 6:15 pm at the Fireside Inn. Anyone interested in more information about the club or who is interested in offering their services to the community and the world should contact Ed Osterman (426-0530) or to attend one of their meetings.
