Playing five games in four nights, the Newtown 7th-grade girlsâ travel team emerged victorious in the tough season-ending Ridgefield Tournament (which included teams from Connecticut and New York).
Newtown defeated teams fromNorwalk, Danbury, Lewisboro (NY) and Ossining (NY) while losing only one - to Ossining, New York.
In the first game of the tournament, Newtown beat Norwalk, 39-32, behind 14-point efforts from Siobhan Cooper and Ashley Larocque. Jackie Ercole tossed in four points and Jessica Budnick was strong off the boards. Christie Caruso had a solid floor game.
The win was followed with a tough 33-31 loss to Ossining, New York, the team Newtown would later face in the tournament finals.
In a 36-32 must-win over Danbury, Larocque led the way with 16 points while Megan LaFlamme, Emily Nezvesky, and Meghan Kelley all combined for another 16 points. Katie OâConnor, Courtney Brunton and Amie Walston swept the boards clean for a nifty combined total of 24 rebounds.
In a semi-final matchup, Newtown trimmed Lewisboro, New York, 37-29 behind a 16-point effort from Larocque. LaFlamme chipped in with seven points and Nezvesky added six. Ercole, OâConnor and Budnick were strong under the boards while Brunton was solid on defense.
In the final â a rematch with Ossining â Newtown rallied from a 13-6 first-period deficit to tie the score 21-21 at the half. A tenacious 1-3-1 defense and full-court press overwhelmed Ossining in the second half as Newtown captured a 49-42 win. Larcoque poured in 22 points (giving her 79 for the tournament) while Cooper and LaFlamme combined for another 14 points. OâConnor and Kelley combined for an additional nine points. Nezvesky, Ercole, Budnick, Walston, Brunton and Caruso all had a hand in the victory.

FAIRFIELD 33, NEWTOWN 27: Joey DeVellis had a solid game at the point, leading Newtown with nine points in a loss to the Fairfield Knicks. Cody Shpunt scored six points while Michael Klein and Michael Kennedy chipped in with four apiece. Tad Pierson and Jack Quinn played well on defense.
