As the opening show of Newtown High School’s musical production of City of Angels approaches, cast, crew, and pit members have been busy practicing at the school.

On Friday, March 6, NHS Choral Director Jane Matson, when making a few announcements about the production for the students involved, took time to congratulate the students on how well they have learned the music for the production.

City of Angels is a musical about a novelist trying to turn a book into a screenplay, and it shows both the plot of the writer’s attempt to create a screenplay and the plot of the fictional film being creating.

City of Angels is showing at NHS March 19, 20, and 21 at 7 pm, and March 22 at 2 pm. Tickets are $14 for students and senior citizens and $18 for adults.

Tickets will be available at the door and are available in advance online at nhsc.booktix.com.

As Ms Matson said in a recently release from the school, she chose City of Angels for this year’s musical, because she knew, “Our students could rise to the challenge of this complex show. They will be able to stretch their acting wings with the intricate plot and challenge themselves vocally with the difficult music. My second reason for choosing this show was that the band plays such an important role. We consider the band another character in the show and this show gave us an opportunity to feature our incredibly talented musicians.

“Lastly, this show is a technical challenge. Half in black and white and half in color, the set, lighting, and costumes must weave effortlessly between the two without ever distracting from the story,” Ms Matson said in the release.

Newtown High School seniors Kyle Mangold, left, and Aidan Petershack right, rehearsed for the high school’s upcoming musical production of City of Angels on Friday, March 6.
