The Jr Newtown Action Alliance will hold a one-day youth leadership summit on gun violence prevention on Saturday, May 24, at Newtown High School for students middle school through college age. Programs will be presented in the high school’s cafeteria and Lecture Hall from 9 am until 6 pm.

The summit will explore issues surrounding the epidemic of gun violence, encourage youth to find their voices and use the power of their voices to inspire change, according to Jr NAA.

#HonorWithAction Connecticut: A Youth Leadership Summit On Gun Violence Prevention will be a full-day event bringing together youth from all areas of Connecticut to investigate the many issues that contribute to gun violence in America through workshops on mental health, urban violence, writing for publication, healing through the arts, and more.

“This isn’t just about what happened in Newtown at Sandy Hook School. Gun violence is a daily occurrence across the country,” says Newtown High School senior Sarah Clements, the group’s founder and chairwoman. “And, our generation is the most disproportionately affected by gun violence.”

The Jr NAA is a chapter of the Newtown Action Alliance, a grassroots organization, established in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, working to bring about legislative and cultural changes that will reduce gun violence because gun violence is a public health crisis.

“We are not doing all that we can do to save our future generations. That needs to change,” said Sarah, “and we believe that change starts with us.”

Registration is $30; late registration fees apply will after May 2. Financial scholarships are available from The Newtown Foundation.

Event and registration details are available on the Facebook event on the Jr. Newtown Action Alliance Event page.
