ORANGE â On Tuesday, March 24, in the Case Memorial Library Meeting Room at 7 pm, the Orange and Milford Historical Societies will present âLower Housatonic River Valley, Then & Nowâ by Dr Lucianne Lavin from the Institute for American Indian Studies.
Ms Lavin will present an illustrated introduction to the Native American communities whose homelands once encompassed the coasts and uplands of the greater Milford-Orange area. The presentation will discuss local Indian history and cultural traditions as interpreted through archaeological finds, historical research and oral traditions from more than 10,000 years ago to the present. Some pertinent artifacts from the collection of the Institute for American Indian Studies will be displayed at the presentation.
Ms Lavin is presently director of research and collections at the Institute for American Indian Studies, a research museum and educational center in Washington, a member of the stateâs Native American Heritage Advisory Council, and editor of the journal of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut.
She is an anthropological archaeologist who has more than 30 years of research and field experience in Northeastern archaeology and anthropology, including teaching, museum exhibits and curatorial work, cultural resource management, editorial work and public relations.Â
