A group of Girl Scouts met with First Selectman Daniel Rosenthal outside Newtown Municipal Center on March 6, when he shared a proclamation recognizing Girl Scout Day, just ahead of Girl Scout Week, which annually marks the anniversary of the organization's start.

Mr Rosenthal proclaimed March 12 as Girl Scout Day. He also read the proclamation.

"Whereas, March 12, 2018, marks the 106th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America," he read, "which began in 1912 when Savannah, G.A., native Juliette Gordon Low gathered 18 girls to provide them the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually."

The proclamation also noted Girl Scouting began in Connecticut in that same year.

Girl Scout Week runs from March 11 to 17 this year.

Mr Rosenthal said his daughter Emi has been a Girl Scout since she was in kindergarten, and he said he hoped the girls would "stick with it."

"A big part of Girl Scouts is what we do for other people," said Mr Rosenthal.

Girl Scouts present for the event represented Troops 50512, 50592, 50157, 50819, 50334, 50293, and 50611.
