Four-Vehicle Crash Sends Three To Hospital, Snarls Traffic
Police report that a four-vehicle accident occurred about 4 pm on March 11 at the four-way intersection of Berkshire Road (Route 34), Bennetts Bridge Road, and Grays Plain Road in Sandy Hook.
The collision resulted in three people being transported to the hospital for medical evaluation. Also, the incident created extensive travel delays during the evening rush period.
The driver of one vehicle involved in the accident needed to be extricated from the wreckage by Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company.
Police said that a 2007 Honda Pilot SUV driven by Amanda Monaco, 58, of 1 Beckett Village was waiting at a stop sign on northbound Grays Plain Road.
Motorist Shirley Viszkocsil, 57, of Oxford, who was driving a 2005 Saab 9-5 sedan, was waiting at a stop sign on southbound Bennetts Bridge Road, police said.
Motorist Eric Wittmann, 39, of 46 Osborne Hill Road, who was driving a 2012 Nissan Murano SUV, was waiting behind the Saab, police said.
At that time, motorist Valberene DaCosta Fermano, 28, of Danbury was driving a 2012 Honda Civic sedan westward on Berkshire Road and was approaching its intersection with Bennetts Bridge Road and Grays Plain Road, police said.
The Pilot then attempted to travel from Grays Plain Road and cross Berkshire Road in order to enter Bennetts Bridge Road, but the front end of the Civic which was traveling on Berkshire Road hit the right side of the Pilot. The front end of the Pilot then struck the left side of the Saab. The right side of the Saab was forced into a guardrail. The Civic then struck the Murano.
Viszkocsil, who was driving the Saab, was trapped inside that vehicle and needed to be extricated by firefighters.
Viszkocsil, as well as DaCosta Fermano, who was driving the Civic, and Luana DePaula Perera, 31, of Danbury, who was a Civic passenger, all were transported by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Danbury Hospital for medical evaluation of various types of pain, police said.
Monaco received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign, police said. DaCosta Fermano received an infraction for driving without a license and for driving an unregistered vehicle, police said.
The accident caused travel delays on the heavily used Berkshire Road during the evening rush.
Police Officer Bart Lorancaitis investigated the accident. Sandy Hook First Assistant Fire Chief Michael Burton was incident commander.
