Newtown High School’s gymnastics team members, Elisha Wilson, Kaitlyn Tumney, and Anna Jannott, competed among the best in Connecticut at the State Open at New Milford High School on March 8.

Wilson scored an 8.8 on the balance beam for a tenth-place finish, and also had an 8.0 on the uneven bars, and an 8.75 for her floor routine. “She was solid throughout her beam routine and showed off her smile on floor,” Newtown Head Coach Keirsten Raccio said.

“Anna scored 8.4 on beam with one of the most solid routines I have seen all year. Kaitlyn scored 8.45 on floor, showing off her powerful tumbling,” the coach added.

Newtown did not place as a team (Woodstock Academy took first place) but the Nighthawks had some standout performances.

“Though there was some tough competition, the girls did their best on the events that they competed. Kaitlyn and Elisha will be heading off to the Senior National Showcase in Florida come May, and Anna has one more year ahead of her. I am hoping to see great things from Anna next season,” Raccio said.

Kaitlyn Tumney performs her floor routine during the Class L state championships the week before competing in the State Open. Tumney was one of three Nighthawks, joining Anna Jannott and Elisha Wilson, to qualify for the Open.
