Walter Benjamin Hassell, 74, died March 7, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr Hassell was born in the Bronx, N.Y., April 15, 1935. He was the son of Mary Hassell, currently residing in Palm Bay, Fla., and the late Herbert Hassell.
Mr Hassell was a teacher in Bridgeport for 12 years, and then later at Newtown Middle School until retirement in 1995.
He and his wife, Arlene, of Prospect, formerly of Monroe and Seymour, recently celebrated their 50th golden wedding anniversary by renewing their wedding vows.
Three daughters, three grandsons, a brother, and several other relatives also survive Mr Hassell.
A memorial gathering was scheduled from 4 to 6:30 pm, with a memorial service at 6:30 pm, Thursday, March 11, at Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 26 Waterbury Road (Route 69) in Prospect. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family at Lawncroft Cemetery in Fairfield in May.
