Three In A Row For Laxmen
For the third year in a row, members of the Newtown High School boysâ lacrosse team won the IAS Ice-Out Tournament in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Newtownâs players comprised a team called the Indians which beat a team from Belmont, Mass in the semifinals and a team from West Springfield, Mass in the championship game to secure the âthree-peat.â Results are as follows:
In the qualifying rounds:
Newtown 12, Tyngsboro (Mass) Tigers 6: Junior attackman Lewis Thompson had five goals and three assists. Senior midfielder Dylan Huebner scored three times. Senior defender Ralph Sergiovanni played physically in front of junior goalkeeper Brandon Body (six saves).
Newtown 15, South Hadley (Mass) Tigers 7: Sophomores Trey Trudell and Justin Brophy, and junior Dan Sclafani each scored three goals to lead the Nighthawksâ offense.
West Springfield (Mass) 10, Newtown 8: A few Newtown mistakes and a tough West Springfield defense tripped up the Nighthawks. Senior defender Jamie Bowers was a force defensively, and Huebner (three goals, one assist) provided the spark for Newtownâs offense.
Newtown 18, Rutland (VT) Raiders 4: Newtown needed an eight-goal differential to secure the No. 2 seed for the playoffs. Senior attackman Zach Dent helped with four goals in the rout. Senior defender Chris Gregoryâs hustle in the Newtown end of the field made sure that the Nighthawks went into the playoff round on a high note.
In the quarterfinals:
Newtown 17, IAS Cougars 3: Newtown opened up a 10-1 lead on the host team. The hustle and teamwork of sophomore Brendan McNamara and junior Alex Miller enabled Newtown to dominate at the midfield, and senior defender Dana Hansen shut down the opposing attack with heads up defense.
In the semifinals:
Newtown 8, Team Lunch 7: Newtown jumped out to a 6-2 lead over the talented club team from Belmont, Mass and held on to move through to the championship game. Juniors Colby Summerlin (two goals, two assists) and Lewis Thompson (three goals, two assists) powered the offense, while Sergiovanni and Bowers were difference-makers on defense.
In the championship game:
Newtown 8, West Springfield 7: The Nighthawks avenged their only blemish on the day and secured the title with another tough win against a quality opponent. Body made nine saves â some of them spectacular â to keep Newtown in the see-saw battle. Connor McNamara was a rock on defense. Senior attackman Tim Dalton answered the offensive call, scoring three crucial goals with the game on the line.
