Newtown Volunteer Hits One Out Of The Park For Minor League Ball Club

When a local baseball team was looking to drum up some more action in its stands, in the form of fans, it turned to a Newtown volunteer to supply the lights and camera.

The Danbury Westerners, a summer collegiate baseball team and a nonprofit organization, was looking for a way to increase awareness of the organization within the community. The team thought that a promotional video would be a great vehicle to increase awareness about the team, but did not have the resources to create one.

Mike Malone, president of the Westerners, contacted the Greater Danbury Nonprofit Resource Center (GDNRC) to see if it could help. The GDNRC recruits professionally skilled volunteers to assist local nonprofit organizations.

The GDNRC called on Newtowner Don Leonard, of Masterpiece Video, and he generously agreed to donate his time and expertise to help spread the news about the Westerners. Mr Leonard shot and edited a ten-minute promotional video that highlights the history of the Westerners, its commitment to community service and family-centered entertainment. This video is now used by the Westerners to get the team’s story out to the community

Michael Malone was thrilled with the video that Mr Leonard created and appreciative that the GDNRC connected the Westerners with him. Mr Malone commented when the video was completed, “We could not have afforded the professional work that Mr Leonard so graciously designed and developed for us. The Westerners is very appreciative for this wonderful opportunity.”

“The GDNRC has been very fortunate to have had highly qualified volunteers such as Don step forward to assist our local agencies. This the second volunteer project Don has worked on for us; we are truly grateful,” stated Casey Levene, volunteer coordinator for the GDNRC.

The Greater Danbury Resource Center recruits volunteers with professional skills to assist local nonprofit organizations. Today more than ever nonprofit organizations are facing decreased funding and an increase in demand for their services. Professionals with experience in areas such as marketing, communications, human resources, finance and information technology can help greater Danbury nonprofits increase their capacity to serve the local community. This year the GDNRC volunteers have created websites, provided expertise in the areas of marketing, public relations, and finance.
