Mako Swimmers Compete In Championships

Two Newtown swimmers from the Western Connecticut YMCA Mako swim team qualified to compete in the New England YMCA Swimming Championships at Harvard University this Saturday, March 13.

Aidan Kennedy, 7, and Colby Delia, 8, both Newtown residents qualified in several events.

The Makos have been Yankee Cluster Champions for the past five years and swim out of the YMCA in Brookfield. The head coach is Roger Simmons. Kelly Moen coaches the 8-and-under group.

Kennedy joined the team last spring after turning 7. Delia was already on the Makos team following in the footsteps of his older brother and sisters who also love the sport. It didn’t take long for the Newtown duo to become friends and join forces with Connor Hunt (7) of Ridgefield and Timmy Joyce (now 9) of Bethel to make up the 8-and-under relay team in the 100-yard freestyle and 100 medley for the Western Connecticut YMCA Makos. Kennedy has qualified for the New England Championship in six events and Delia qualified in four events.
