PORTSMOUTH, N.H. â Historic New England will present a view-week course, âAt Home in the Georgian Period,â at the Governor John Langdon House on Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 pm, starting May 7.
Environment, politics, climate, religion and material culture shaped the patterns of life in the early American colonies. This course explores the many influences of the Georgian period: the buildings, furniture and decorative arts developed during this time, the turbulent politics leading to the War of Independence, and the impact of these influences on daily life.
The schedule includes: May 7, a historical overview with Christopher L. Pastore, University of New Hampshire in American History; May 14, architecture with Joseph Cornish, senior stewardship manager, Historic New England; May 21, furniture with Nancy Carlisle, curator, Historic New England; May 28, interior finishes and decorative arts with Elizabeth Garret Widmer, writer and scholar; and ending June 4 with a special tour of the 1784 Governor John Langdon House and the 1716 Warner House.
