Newtown’s park lights have been upgraded to new LED fixtures thanks to a $10,000 grant earned through Energize Connecticut’s Clean Energy Communities program, administered by Eversource.

A total of 31 light post fixtures have been replaced with new high efficiency LEDs, which will save the town roughly $4,000 and reduce its energy usage by more than 21,000 kilowatt-hours every year.

The town’s Sustainable Energy Commission helped to secure the grant by promoting certain in-home efficiency services among residents. Newtown earned the grant by achieving a high-level of community-wide participation in Energize Connecticut energy-saving programs, including Home Energy Solutions. Approximately 14 percent, or more than 1,200 Newtown homes, participated in the program.

Jim Costello, an employee of ATS, a subcontractor of JK Energy Solutions, removes a light fixture at Liberty Park on Elm Drive in preparation to replace it with a new energy efficient LED fixture.
