NMS Students Display Scientific Findings

Inside the Newtown Middle School’s cafeteria on Friday, February 25, students stood alone, with partners, or with other group members along with completed presentations on recently completed science projects.

Eighth grade student Bobby Silver said the amount of snowfall from this winter made him want to study the effect of different chemicals on ice. He found a product called Safe Step, a mix of magnesium and calcium chloride, which, according to Bobby, “melted the ice the best.”

Fellow students Angelina Ruggiero and Nikki Ferraz tested how different food — carrots, oranges, and food pellets — affected Nikki’s guinea pig, Porky. They found when Porky ingested oranges, he completed a maze designed by Angelina and Nikki quicker than when he ate the other food options.

The projects ranged with scope and purpose. Eighth graders Bryce Decker and Jake Lambert wanted to learn about the effects of different pollutants on spider plants. Eighth graders Sarah Lynch and Shelby Tulla studied the effect of music on memory.

Individually students answered questions about their projects during the duration of the science fair.
