George F.R. Miller, Jr

Industrial Designer Developed Dixie Cup Dispenser

George F.R. Miller, Jr, 79, of Fairfield, husband of the late Patricia Gallagher Miller, died February 28, in St Vincent’s Medical Center. He was born and raised in New York City and graduated from Stuyvesant High School.

He will be remembered by his family and friends, including his daughter, Tracy Hubbard, and her husband Stuart, of Newtown; two cherished grandchildren; one brother, Ronald Miller, and his wife Carolynn; and two nieces. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his son, Kevin.

He served in the United States Army, 43rd Infantry Division from 1951 to 1954. Mr Miller received his bachelor of industrial design in 1959 and his MBA in June of 1962 at Syracuse University. While at Syracuse University his three-dimensional mural, which celebrates the adoption of the Human Rights declaration, was selected to be on permanent display at the UN.

He was director of marketing services at Syracuse China Corp from 1963 to 1969. In 1969, he became the manager of new product development for American Can Co., where he developed the Dixie cup dispenser. In 1972, Mr Miller became a professor at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield. He retired from Sacred Heart in 2000.

Mr Miller was honored to be invited into the culture and homes of local residents during a life-altering trip in the Mount Everest region in the 1980s. He enjoyed classical music and organized many cultural trips to New York City. He enjoyed model shipbuilding, furniture building, stained glass, cribbage and backgammon, and was an avid reader of history.

Family and friends celebrated his life March 6.
