Marie Grojean Newman, RN, MS, of Trumbull, wife of Abbott A. Newman, MD, died March 8 at Bridgeport Hospital. She was 79 years old.
Born in New York City, she was a longtime Easton resident before moving to Trumbull.
Mrs Newman enjoyed a long career in nursing and education, most recently as a hospice nurse and volunteer for the Visiting Nurses Association, of Bridgeport.
During her long career, she served as a resource teacher for Sandy Hook and Hawley Schools in Newtown.
She began her nursing career at Yale-New Haven Hospital and was supervisor of the Pediatric Department and clinical instructor in pediatric nursing at St Vincentâs Hospital. She also taught nursing at Bridgeport Hospital. She was active in the Civil Rights movement and a longtime volunteer.
In addition to her husband of 51 years, she is survived by daughters, Deborah Newman of Aurora, Ill., Patricia Newman Gifford of Cheshire, and Cheryl Newman Howard of New Milford; and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Harold Allen Newman.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 11, at 11 am, in Trinity Episcopal Church, Nichols, with the Reverend Judith Toffey officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
