It's Summer, It's A Party, And You Are Invited!
Itâs Summer, Itâs A Party, And You Are Invited!
The biggest birthday bash of all time is coming to town, and you are invited. Circle the first weekend in August with a big red pen and do not leave town. That is when Newtown pulls out all the stops for an All Day Birthday Celebration in honor of the townâs tercentennial year.
The extravaganza of events begins Friday evening, August 5, with a jazz performance at the Pleasance on Main Street and continues the next day at Fairfield Hills. Do not expect to play pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey; a vintage baseball game, a reenactment by the 5th Connecticut Regiment, painting, pony rides, a moon bounce, and a slide are just a few of the activities planned by the Tercentennial Steering Committee, says coordinator Barbara Kasbarian.
Whether you prefer to prepare a gourmet meal of your own or purchase goodies from food and drink vendors at Fairfield Hills, pick your picnic spot and listen to live music by local adult and youth bands. Wander off to view the antique car show after lunch, or test your skills on the blow-up obstacle course designed for adults and teens. And just when you think it is time to pack it up and head home, the day culminates with a fireworks display off of Queen Street.
Shuttle buses from the Newtown Middle School, Newtown High School, and the Grand Union parking lot will provide transportation to several areas around the Fairfield Hills property designated for optimum viewing of the fireworks.
Ms Kasbarian is counting on perfect weather. âIâm hanging out my rosary beads,â she says.
Just in case, the committee has set August 7 as the rain date for the birthday celebration.
Cape Cod might have the ocean, New Jersey might have Six Flags, and it might be less humid in Vermont in August, but only Newtown has a 300th year birthday party this summer.
