DANBURY – Steve Somers, a WFAN sports radio personality, will be the featured speaker at the 11th annual Danbury Westerners breakfast on Friday, June 3, at 7:30 pm at the Ethan Allen Hotel in Danbury.

The event will be co-hosted by the Honorable Mark D. Boughton, Mayor of Danbury and WCSU President, Dr. James W. Schmotter, PhD.

Known as the “Schmooze,” Mr Somers is a popular host on WFAN sports radio for his humorous style and for discussing a wide array of sports topics.

Mr Somers is a San Francisco native and a University of California graduate who got his start doing high school sports on a top-40 San Francisco radio station, KNEW.

Prior to coming to New York, Mr Somers moved to television to start a 17-year career in San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles and, later, in Atlanta. He teamed with Bryant Gumbel in Los Angeles and also hosted a sports radio show on the Gene Autry owned radio station. He won an Atlanta Emmy for writing and producing a documentary on Ted Turner’s winning America’s Cup in 1977.

When asked about his biggest moment in New York sports since WFAN has been on the air, he said, (There were) two, actually. First, the Rangers winning their first cup in 54 years (1994), and second, the Yankees winning the 1996 World Series.”

Mr. Somers joined WFAN Radio at its very beginning in July of 1987. He was the first “overnight” sports radio guy in the country and now does the evening shift following afternoon hosts, Mike Francesa and Chris Russo of the “Mike and the Mad Dog Show.”
